shinigami
A Japanese death god, one who reaps souls.
After World War I, the European image of Death found its way into Japan, and most modern depictions of shinigami are at least slightly influenced by European folklore. Unlike the European Death, shinigami are commonly depicted as a species of death spirits rather than a single personification of the concept of death.
